Estimates of the total extent of Indian sugar imports have exceeded 700,000 tonnes for this year, which will virtually cripple local Pakistani manufacturers and is already causing an enormous glut on the domestic market.
The local sugar industry expects to produce around 2.5m tonnes this year, but many businesses fear the returns will be small as piles of Indian sugar enter the country by rail. Fifty per cent of the total is already in Pakistan but the rest is steadily arriving, creating a flooded market with a total of around 3.2m tonnes.
