Gathered Foods, the US seafood alternative company behind the Good Catch plant-based ‘tuna’ brand, has received backing from a group of celebrities. 

Cheers and Hunger Games actor Woody Harrelson, actress Shailene Woodley and socialite Paris Hilton are among those to back the New York-based company. 

Their investment follows on the heels of a US$36.8m Series B financing round earlier this year, which included backing from General Mills.

just-food has asked for details of the level of investment put in by the celebrities. The company said: “Due to confidentiality agreements with the investors, we’re unable to share amounts on these particular investments.”

Good Catch was founded by chefs Derek and Chad Sarno, Derek is also known for developing the Wicked Kitchen vegan range for UK supermarket group Tesco.

On the news of the backing from celebrities, Chris Kerr, CEO and co-founder of Gathered Foods, said: “Consumer demand and culinary trends show the evolving excitement for plant-based foods, and the unified support from such an influential group goes far beyond funding alone, The message underscored by their backing is invaluable.”

On his investment, Harrelson said: “I have known Chad Sarno for years and am a huge fan of the culinary work Chad and his brother Derek are driving in the market. I’m excited to work with a food brand like Good Catch that leads with taste and aligns with my personal beliefs of making a difference for the animals and our planet.”

The Good Catch brand is available in more than 4,500 retail outlets across the US and the UK. New products are due to come to market this summer, Gathered Foods said.

It also said there are plans to add further international retail listings later this year.
