Spanish pasta maker Pastas Gallo and Japanese food giant Nissin Foods Group are jointly launching a brand of instant noodles, Soba, in Spain.

Soba Gallo Nissin will be sold exclusively in Spain and Andorra, Gallo said. The range will include original, teriyaki and curry varieties. It will be available in a cup format, with an RRP of EUR1.6 (US$1.69), and envelopes, with a retail price of approximately EUR1.

Gallo, a market leader in the Spanish pasta category, said the launch will enable it to capitalise on expected demand growth for instant noodles. The food group cited Kantar data, which forecasts a doubling of sales in the next five years.

For its part Nissin, which invented instant and cup noodles, is focused on growing its overseas sales to offset weak consumption trends in Japan. In February, Nissin announced a deal with Mitsubishi Corp. to form an instant noodle JV in Singapore, India, Thailand and Vietnam.
