Peruvian exporters of lucuma, or eggfruit, have suggested that moves by France, Germany and Spain to approve sale of the product could be the first step to wider EU distribution.

EU approval would boost exports and production of lucuma, Diego Fuentes of export organisation ADEX (Asociación de Exportadotres del Perú) told just-food.

France approved lucuma imports in March. Germany and Spain followed suit last week, growers association Prolucuma said.

According to ADEX figures, export values of lucuma jumped 198% in the first four months of 2009, boosted by official French approval.
