Baltic retailer Maxima has secured competition clearance in Poland for its acquisition of local supermarket chain Aldik Nova.
The deal marks Maxima’s entry into Poland, which becomes the retailer’s fifth market behind the three Baltic states – Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania – and Bulgaria.
Aldik Nova operates 24 stores in the Polish provinces of Lublin and Subcarpathia, which are in the south-east of the country. Poland’s competition watchdog, the UOKiK, announced it had cleared the deal on 29 December.
According to figures on Maxima’s website, the Baltic retailer booked turnover of LTL7.29bn (US$2.7bn) in 2010, a fall of 6.1% on 2009. In 2008, the retailer reported a turnover of LTL8.49bn.
