A number of countries are lining up for accession to full EU membership, and an EU-backed ecological lobbying group has taken this as an opportunity to highlight its concerns over genetically modified food. The organisation, ANPED (formely the Alliance of Northern People for Environment and Development, now renamed the Northern Alliance for Sustainability, is lobbying Brussels to address positions on GM food and crops as part of the membership negotiations.
ANPED’s remarks have focused primarily on Poland, expected to accede to the EU in the first swathe of new members. The organisation claims that 12 GM tests were conducted in Poland in 1999, including rape seed tests.
