Danish discount retailer Netto has denied reports that UK retail giant Tesco is looking to acquire 158 of its stores in Poland.

Reports today (28 April) have suggested a takeover of Netto would enable the UK retailer to enter the Polish convenience store sector.

However, Claus Juel Jensen, managing director of Netto told just-food: “Our Polish operations began in 1995 and they have had profit each year and are doing a good job.”

Jensen said the company has not been approached by Tesco for a takeover and is planning a further 30 store openings this year.

The first Netto store in Poland opened in Szczecin. The expansion of the branch is concentrated in the north western part of the country from Szczecin to Gdansk and through the country to Bydgoszcz, Poznan, and Zielona Góra. The retailer currently has 158 stores in Poland.
