Portuguese retailer Jerónimo Martins has admitted its interest in acquiring the Plus discount business in the country.
The company was initially reluctant to be drawn on its reported interest in the 75 stores, which are owned by German conglomerate Tengelmann.
However, in a statement to the Portuguese stock exchange, Jerónimo Martins said it would “analyse all growth opportunities”, including the Plus business, which, it added “might fit in the group’s expansion strategy”.
Tengelmann ceded control of its Plus stores in Germany last month and is weighing up the options for its discount business throughout Europe.
Jerónimo Martins runs supermarkets in Portugal but already operates discount stores in Poland.
