A consignment of 90 Irish steer sides that were over thirty months at the time of slaughter has been detained on entry into the UK. The meat, although it had tested negative for BSE, was certified as coming from animals over thirty months at the time of slaughter.

The discovery was made on Friday (4th January) as the consignment was being unloaded at ADM Ltd, Eastbourne. The beef came from O’Farrell Meats in County Cork, Ireland.
The Chief Veterinary Officer of Ireland has been notified and investigations into the case, including the destination of and documentation relating to this consignment are continuing. It is illegal under UK law to sell meat from animals over thirty months of age for human consumption.
