Carrefour has extended its distribution network in Romania with a deal at southern Europe’s largest logistics site, Cefin Logistics Park.

The move will see the French retail giant initially lease 12,000 sq metres of space. However, by 2009, Carrefour will bring more capacity on-stream as it moves into 45,000 sq metres of space at the centre in Pitesti, west of the Romanian capital Bucharest.
Carrefour’s haulier partner is Norbert Dentressangle, who will also ensure onward dispatch to the shops. Carrefour has an existing 17,000 square metre distribution centre at Otopeni: the retailer is planning to build up a network of regional distribution centres to keep pace with its store openings.
“Logistics is not yet well developed in Romania,” a spokesperson told just-food. “All the usual logistics infrastructure problems are present in Romania, such as roads and buildings. Carrefour is investing heavily in the country and particularly the people, since this style of logistics is unknown in Romania.”
In August Carrefour opened its eighth hypermarket in Romania. The store is Carrefour’s fifth in Bucharest, with 3,600 sq metres of retail space.
