Romania’s competition watchdog has given approval for the proposed acquisition of supermarket chain La Fourmi by Belgium’s Delhaize.
In March, Delhaize announced plans to acquire the La Fourmi stores through its Romanian subsidiary Mega Image. The company will pay EUR18.6m (US$28.8m) for the 14 outlets located in Bucharest. The deal is expected to close in the second quarter of this year.
Romania’s Competition Council said that it does not believe the transaction will lessen competition in the market or allow Delhaize to establish a dominant position.
Officials at the Belgian retailer told just-food that it expects the deal to boost Mega Image sales, as the stores will be converted to the Mega Image format.
The company also anticipates synergies as the La Fourmi stores will be incorperated into the Mega Image distribution network.
