The Russian government is to amend the federal law on the protection of consumer rights to include new clauses requiring that all genetically modified food products carry special labels.

Tass reported that sources at the Anti-Monopoly Policies Ministry had confirmed that the draft amendments would be considered at today’s [Thursday] cabinet meeting.

“The manufacturers of products containing genetically modified components will be obliged to state not only the expiry date, but also information about the composition, additives used and applicable restrictions, such as counterindications.

“The special requirements for the information about products and forms of its presentation will agree with the European standards,” the source said.
