French retail giant Carrefour has told just-food today (15 May) that it is planning to enter the Russian market next year.

“We are going to enter the Russian market in the first half of 2008,” a spokesperson for the group said. “We see great potential for future expansion in Russia.”

Carrefour told just-food that details of its admission into the sector are yet to be finalised, adding that the retailer is still considering various point of entry options.

“We currently have a team in Russia,” Carrefour’s representative revealed. “We don’t yet know where we will open our first stores or the format that we will use.”

It is likely that the group is considering setting up shop in the metropolitan centres of St. Petersburg or Moscow, where a dense population and the beginnings of a modern retail infrastructure will facilitate growth.
