Russian meat processor Cherkizovo has commenced operations at a meat processing plant it acquired in Kaliningrad last year.

The facility now operates the first production line for smoked sausages in the region, Cherkizovo said today (23 June). The plant was acquired in September for the sole purpose of producing delicacy meat products.

Modernisation of the facility included the installation of equipment manufactured by Italian firm Travaglini. It also uses what Cherkizovo claims are “the best Russian and European technologies”.

Investment in the first stage of the project has totalled around US$2.9m to date and the facility now has a production capacity of around ten tonnes per day or 300 tonnes per month.

“From 2010, we have begun to see stable profitability in our meat processing segment, which is closely linked to our successful strategy of restructuring this business and reducing costs,” said Cherkizovo Group’s CEO, Sergey Mikhailov. “Last year’s acquisition of the meat processing plant in the Kaliningrad region was another significant step towards increasing efficiency and securing a strong resource base for this segment.”

Mikhailov said the firm will continue modernisation of the site and plans to launch a second production line for delicacy products and hams by the beginning of 2012.
