Russia has reportedly issued a temporary ban on meat and fish imports from four countries following a salmonella outbreak.

The country’s Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Oversight has blocked imports from select plants in Argentina, Chile, Lithuania and the US, the Prime-Tass news agency has reported.

Alexei Alekseyenko, a spokesperson for the government food safety agency, said salmonella bacteria had been found in chicken from a plant in the US.

Russian officials have also allegedly found salmonella in beef from Argentina and in surimi from Lithuania. In addition, staphylococcus had been found in surimi supplied from Chile.

The bans will officially come into operation on 15 May, Prime-Tass reported.
