Spar International has teamed up with Russian retailer Intertog to open a clutch of supermarkets in the country.

The symbol group said today (7 July) that the franchise deal will see Intertog open stores in the north-west of Russia.

Spar hopes the deal will initially lead to the opening of 20 outlets, ranging from 600-900 square metres within the next “six to nine months”.

“We anticipate the opening of at least two of these very quickly,” a spokesperson for Spar added.

The Netherlands-based retailer has also signed a second licence agreement in Russia but the spokesperson declined to provide details.

In 2010, Spar made EUR774.6m (US$1.11bn) in sales in Russia. At the end of 2010, Spar had 233 stores in the country.
