Russia has announced plans to introduce a state monopoly for black caviar to fight poachers and smugglers who are pushing sturgeon towards extinction in the Caspian Sea region.
The move comes among increasing alarm at the environmental impact of both the legal and illegal trade in sturgeon.
Russia’s State Fisheries Committee has prepared a draft resolution to be signed by President Vladimir Putin enforcing measures for the state regulation of sturgeon. The President has previously described such a move as “a sound idea”.
According to CITES, which has regulated the sturgeon trade since 1998, reduced river flow, destruction of spawning sites, corruption, poaching, organised crime and illicit trade have all contributed to an “alarming depletion of sturgeon stocks in the region.”
