Russian retailer X5 Retail Group has appointed Rewe executive Jan Fuchs as the director of its hypermarkets.
Fuchs joins Russia’s largest retailer by sales from German retailer Rewe, where he was COO of its Russian operations since 2009.
X5 said Fuchs had “extenstive” experience in the retail sector in Eastern Europe and Russia.
The retailer said Fuchs built a profitable business “from scratch” when he was deputy chairman and COO of hypermarket retailer Kaufland in the Czech Republic between 1998 and 2007. He also led Kaufland’s expansion into Slovakia and Poland.
The company said the appointment of Fuchs was in line with X5’s goal of establishing a dedicated management structure for hypermarkets separate from supermarkets by the end of this year.
“We’re delighted to have Jan Fuchs join our management team. He has a proven track record of profitable growth in hypermarkets, and brings critical category management expertise to the job”, CEO Andrei Gusev said today (1 November).
