Russian meat processor Miratorg Agribusiness Holding has started construction of a new pork plant in the Kursk region as it seeks to double capacity.

The slaughterhouse in the Oktyabrsky district of Kursk is set to be up and running in 2020 and will be capable of producing 1m tonnes of pork a year, the company said in a statement. Investment in the project will amount to more than RUB160bn (US$2.77bn), of which over RUB68bn will cover the cost of a robotic meat chopper.

Miratorg said the facility will create 5,000 jobs in the region. The first stage of the project will be for processing meat and in 2021 the company will launch a complex for the slaughter and boning of pigs.

Company president Viktor Linnik said: “This project organically complements the already existing capacity of the pig division and allows us to multiply the assortment and volume of high quality meat products to the market, and therefore significantly increase its availability for consumers throughout the country.”

In addition to the slaughterhouse in the Kursk region, a grain company will be established and the production of mixed fodder will be launched. New pig-breeding complexes will also be built.

As well as meat production, Miratorg said in June it was considering proposals to invest up to US$400m in the launch of a dairy division, with a focus on the production of milk and cheese products.
