South African grocery retailer Woolworths Holdings has appointed former Marks and Spencer chairman and CEO Sir Stuart Rose as a non-executive director.

Rose stepped down from the position of CEO of Marks & Spencer last year and retired as chairman earlier this month. His appointment took effect from yesterday (19 January).

“Sir Stuart brings strong international retail experience to the board,” Woolworths said in a stock exchange filing today. “He has held a number of senior leadership roles in retail in the UK.”

His other board roles include a position on private-equity firm Bridgepoint’s European advisory committee, which he joined in September last year.
