According to local reports, the Slovakian competition office has questioned the planned deal between global retail giants Carrefour and Tesco that would see the UK’s number one supermarket group acquire additional stores in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
An agreement had been reached whereby Tesco would acquire Carrefour’s 11 Czech and four Slovakian hypermarkets in exchange for Tesco’s six completed and two projected Taiwanese hypermarkets.
The Slovak competition office has identified problems with the impact that the deal would have on the Slovakian market. Talks between the government watchdog and retailers will now be held before a decision is reached.
Tesco is already a leader in the Slovakian grocery retail market.
In May the two groups agreed to proceed with the Czech side of the deal, still awaiting authorisation from the Slovakian authorities.
