Foreign retail chains in the Slovak Republic will continue to drive growth in the market this year, with both Tesco and Ahold planning new store openings despite the current economic crisis.
Spokeswoman for Tesco Olga Hrnciarová revealed that the group will focus on opening supermarkets and convenience store outlets.
“They will be smaller, either in the supermarket format of around three thousand square metres or the so-called Express format, where the floor space is less than one thousand square metres,” she told just-food.
Meanwhile, it is believed that Ahold will also focus on expanding smaller scale formats.
However, Ahold’s Lenka Juríková was unwilling to reveal the number of new stores it would be launching in 2009.
