US coffee-to-condiments group J.M. Smucker has reformulated its Uncrustables line of pre-made frozen sandwiches by replacing high fructose corn syrup with sugar.
Smucker said the reformulated, non-GMO certified line, will begin to appear in frozen aisles across the US this summer. The range includes peanut butter and grape jelly, peanut butter and strawberry jam, peanut butter and honey spread, and chocolate-flavoured hazelnut spread varieties.
Smucker’s corporate communications vice-president Maribeth Burns said: “While the immense popularity of Uncrustables has led to record sales, we continually review our products and ingredients to make sure they meet the evolving preferences of our consumers. As more and more families enjoy Unrstables as a snack or a meal, it is important we maintain the superior quality and ingredients consumers have come to expect and the taste they have come to love.”
Last January, Smucker announced plans to build an additional Uncrustables sandwiches manufacturing facility, at Longmont, Colorado, for a total potential investment of US$340m.
Earlier this week, Smucker said it had struck a deal to buy the Wesson cooking oil brand from US peer Conagara Brands for around $285m, subject to “required regulatory approvals”.
