Rumours that kimchi is effective in preventing severe acute respiratory syndrome pushed exports to a new record last year.
Exports of South Korea’s famously spicy and pickled vegetable dish totalled $84.64m in the first 11 months of 2003, up 7.4% from a year earlier, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
Exports to China, the epicentre of the flu-like disease, increased nearly five-fold last year to reach $188,000.
The biggest importer over the 11-month period was Japan, spending $79.03m, followed by the US with $1.93m and Taiwan with $850,000.
The ministry predicted that the year-end total for 2003 may reach 33,000 tons, worth $94m.
