Spain-based confectioner Chupa Chups has laid off 80 temporary workers at its factory in Asturias, in the northwest of the country, and 20 temporary workers at its factory in Barcelona.

The 100 layoffs were due to a downward production trend planned for 2003. The plants in Asturias and Barcelona have been operating at 60% of their capacity since the beginning of 2003, compared to 100% in 2002.

The company added that the job cuts were in line with its strategy, reported the Spanish News Digest.

Chupa Chups posted a net loss of €18m (US$19.4m) for 2002 and a 20% fall in yearly turnover.
