Spanish discount retailer Dia has rolled out a trial of an online grocery offering at two of its neighbourhood stores in Madrid.

The trial, a spokesperson told just-food today (7 June), extends to all products sold in its supermarkets, including food items.

Dia has invested around EUR1m (US$1.3m), the spokesperson said. “This is an initial project only tested in Madrid. We hope to expand the project in the coming months, but we don’t have more informations about this,” the spokesperson added.

Through the trial, customers can order products via Dia’s commercial website – www.dia.es – after which, they will receive an SMS confirmation of the purchase. At the present time, Dia said there are no delivery charges. “Dia is keen to develop this project, but we don’t have deadlines set yet,” the spokesperson said.

Dia, which recently began trialling its neighbourhood store model Dia Fresh in France, last month recorded a “solid” first quarter with earnings boosted by “strong” sales momentum in Brazil and Argentina.
