Dutch value retailer Hema is to open its first store in Spain today (2 April).

A spokesperson told just-food today (1 April) the first store would be a pilot launch and its success would be evaluated over a six-month period.

She disclosed was coy about the number of stores Hema could open in Spain.

“We have an ambition to grow, and want to open more stores but it depends on the success of this launch”.

The Spanish store will have a food, fashion and hardware offering “from the total assortment of our stores in France,” she added.

At the end of last week Hema announced it would open its first two UK stores in London this summer.
