Spanish retailer Grupo El Árbol will re-open seven supermarkets that it acquired from Dinosol tomorrow (27 January) under its own banner, the company confirmed this morning.

Grupo El Árbol completed the acquisition of the supermarkets at the end of last year, a spokesperson for the company confirmed.

“The new stores add 6,000 square metres in selling space and will allow us to better serve our customers in three important markets,” the spokesperson said.

Three of the outlets are located in Badajoz, three are in Segovia and one is in Segovia.

In a statement, Grupo El Árbol’s director Juan Pascual said that the move was an “important” step in the company’s expansion plans for 2009.

The group indicated that it is particularly focusing on expanding in the Castilla y Leon and Extremadura regions.

Pascual added that the group would “soon” be announcing further acquisitions.

Throughout the coming year, Pascual said the company would also invest in its price positioning, with a pledge to refund 100 times the difference if products are found cheaper elsewhere and increased discounts for its store card members.

Grupo El Árbol operates 380 outlets – 348 supermarkets and 32 Max Discount stores – in Spain, mainly in Asturias, Castilla y Leon, Extremadura, Cantabria, Murcia and Almeria.
