Valencia-based grocer Mercadona has revealed that it will invest €150m (US$137m) in Spain’s northwestern region of Galicia, with the opening of 50 supermarkets in the period 2003 to 2007.

This year, the chain will begin expansion into the Galicia region with the opening of just two or three new outlets.

The announced expansion will see the creation of around 2,000 jobs by 2007, adding to Mercadona’s current workforce of 29,000 employees in Spain.
