Spain’s Ebro Puleva is to shake up its rice production in the US with the closure of one site and the construction of a new plant in Memphis.

Some 250 jobs at Ebro’s plant in Houston will go after the company decided a revamp of its footprint in the US would boost efficiency.
Ebro, one of the world’s leading rice producers, will begin building the plant in Memphis later this year. The facility is expected to be up and running in 2010. Production at the Houston site will be switched to the Memphis facility.
Bastiaan de Zeeuw, president and CEO of Ebro’s US rice business Riviana Foods, said: “Development of this new facility is an important step in our ongoing effort to transform Riviana into the world’s most efficient, technically advanced rice company.
“The decision to close the Houston manufacturing and packaging facility was very difficult, but unfortunately, is necessary for the company to grow and meet competitive pressures, invest in its brands and launch new products.”
