Spain-based snacks producer Aperitivos Snack has acquired category peer La Gaviota Alimentación.

The company said the purchase of the Canary Islands-based business is part of a strategy to accelerate diversification and growth in the snacks market, particularly in the nut category segment.

Aperitivos Snack said La Gaviota has become a “benchmark in the food market in the Canary Islands with significant brand recognition in the channels in which it operates”.

The Italian company said in a statement that the current owners of La Gaviota, the Pérez Alonso family, “will remain linked to the group, with strategic and operational contributions from Aperitivos Snack”.

David Pérez Alonso has been general manager of the food producer for 30 years, since 1995.

Alonso said that “the integration of the company by Aperitivos Snack allows us to begin a new stage of consolidation and growth in the sector, maintaining the quality and good service that has always characterised La Gaviota Alimentación”.

Aperitivos Snack, founded in 1987, is headquartered in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in the Canary Islands in Spain.

Its product portfolio includes savoury snacks, biscuits, sweets and chocolates. The company employs approximately 230 people.

La Gaviota was founded in 1982. Its portfolio includes nuts and dried fruits, such as dehydrated exotic fruits, cereals and seeds, and confectionery. The business imports nuts and fruits from 30 countries, including the US, Mexico, India, France and Spain.

It owns brands such as Isola, Najor and Bentor.

According to La Gaviota’s website, it offers “complete regional coverage through its own infrastructure and staff”. It has a wholesale sales point in Mercatenerife, which serves the hospitality sector in the Canary Islands’ region.
