Consumer affairs minister Ravi Karunanayake said the incoming regulation would force food manufacturers selling onto the Sri Lankan market to obtain a ‘Certificate of Product Approval’ from the Sri Lanka Standards Institute, following a written recommendation from a government analyst.
Heavy penalties would be imposed on traders ignoring quality standards, he said. Government analyst K.Sivirajah told the island press: “We will come down hard on those whose marketed products differ in quality to the analysed sample.”
