The Sri Lanka government is about to introduce legislation that will require food manufacturers to submit samples of their products to its national analysis department to detect any toxins that may be present.

Consumer affairs minister Ravi Karunanayake said the incoming regulation would force food manufacturers selling onto the Sri Lankan market to obtain a ‘Certificate of Product Approval’ from the Sri Lanka Standards Institute, following a written recommendation from a government analyst.
Heavy penalties would be imposed on traders ignoring quality standards, he said. Government analyst K.Sivirajah told the island press: “We will come down hard on those whose marketed products differ in quality to the analysed sample.”
