The result of the 2000 beet campaign was a total sugar output of 1,240,000 tonnes in Denmark, Sweden, Germany and Finland, which is on a par with the level of recent years (production in 1997: 1,256,000 tonnes, in 1998: 1,202,000 tonnes and in 1999: 1,294,000 tonnes).

Danisco also produces sugar at a number of partly owned factories in Lithuania, where the production totalled 105,000 tonnes of sugar (117,000 tonnes in 1999).

Favourable weather conditions resulted in good beet quality with a record-high sugar content. This, coupled with a successful implementation of recent years´ investment programme designed to optimise the Danish and Swedish sugar factories, has resulted in a large sugar production despite a beet acreage reduction of 7-8 per cent within the EU this year.

Production was satisfactory at all factories and is in line with the forecasts made on the basis of the field sample results announced in August and September 2000.
“It´s satisfactory that the recent years´ restructuring investment programme, which will be completed at Örtofta Sugar Factory in Sweden this year, has now resulted in a good and efficient campaign,” says Executive Vice President Mogens Granborg.
