Axfood is upping the pace of its sustainable development initiatives and will review its environmental activities, from transport and energy consumption to ecological products.

“This announcement highlights the importance we place on environmental concerns,” a spokesperson for the company told just-food. “As yet we have not said when the review will be completed, but at that time we will take measures, where appropriate, to improve our impact on the environment.”

The company announced today (23 May) that it will not sell fish and shellfish from threatened species to ensure sustainable supply.

“The first step is already taken regarding the assortment of frozen fish,” says Åsa Domeij. “We will also inform our staff about the fish policy and what it means to create a sustainable fish assortment. Step by step we will approach the goal of a sustainable fish assortment in all the stores in the Axfood group.”

The Swedish foods retailer said that it would also be focusing marketing on communicating the message that its fish are sourced sustainably.

Axfood operates the wholly owned store chains Hemköp, Willys, Willys hemma and PrisXtra, comprising slightly more than 220 stores. The group also owns the Dagab and Axfood Närlivs wholesale banners.
