Finland’s Atria has moved to restore profitability at Swedish sandwich and salad maker Sardus Latta Maaltider.
The company has closed a Stockholm production plant and concentrating activities on factories in the towns of Norrkoeping and Halmstad.
Christer Aberg, MD of Atria Scandinavia, said about 100 employees would be made redundant as a result of the closure and other restructuring operations. Aberg said costs in the Swedish subsidiary had been too high.
“We still have strong belief in the future of sandwiches and salads. By international comparisons consumption in Sweden is still low and increased market growth can be expected, mainly within the retail trade.”
Atria last month announced plans to invest about SEK10m (US$1.5m) in its ready meals factory near Malmo, Sweden, as a result of cooperation with supermarket chain ICA.
