Arla Foods is to become the latest dairy processor to sell products on GlobalDairyTrade, the auction platform for dairy commodities set up by rival dairy company Fonterra.

The company said it would start selling skim milk powder (SMP) medium and low heat products from 3 April. It will then evaluate whether to sell more products.

Arla Foods CEO Peder Tuborgh said: “The GlobalDairyTrade auction platform is one of the tools we intend to use to reach and service new and present customers in a cost effective way. We believe that customers will appreciate the opportunity to source Arla Foods products on the GDT auction platform.”

The GlobalDairyTrade platform was devised by Fonterra in 2008. In March, Fonterra said it was opening up the site to allow other dairy processors to sell products on the platform.

Earlier this month, Australian dairy co-op Murray Goulburn said it would sell lactose on the commodity auction platform.

GlobalDairyTrade has sold more than US$5bn until now and around 700,000 metric tonnes of products are traded annually.
