Swiss retail co-operative Migros is set to transfer the management of its fish business to its meat and poultry subsidiary Micarna.
Efficiency gains will be seen in chill chain management, in which Micarna has a heavy IT investment. The current buying and marketing team will be integrated into the Micarna business, close to the fish handling facilities.
Micarna (‘myMeat’) has sales of around CHF700m (US$569.7m) and supplies over 500 Migros stores across Switzerland and Germany.
Migros has retail sales of CHF21bn at 590 outlets and profits of CHF754m. Its manufacturing arm employs 10,000 staff and supplies 90% of its production to Migros stores.
