Officials at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) have told just-food that an attempt to quickly restart and resolve the Doha Development Round’s food talks seems to have failed today (22 September).

Senior government civil servants from the Group of Seven – the US, the EU, China, India, Japan, Australia and Brazil – who broadly represent all WTO member countries, had flown to Geneva last week.

Their task was to resolve the outstanding issues that has caused the July Doha talks to collapse – the most important being developing countries’ protective duties against food import surges.

However, just-food has learnt, the representatives have now flown home without agreement.

“This could mean total deadlock, or that they think maybe they have something they can discuss on the phone to move things forward,” WTO officials commented.

Geneva diplomats are pessimistic, however, making restarting the talks in earnest ahead January’s US presidential inauguration unlikely.
