Swiss retailer Coop plans to restructure its logistics operations, designed to save CHF60m (US$60.9m) a year and reduce CO2 emissions.
The ‘Post 2015’ logistics strategy will mean that many of Coop’s distribution operations will be consolidated in its Schafisheim centre, and much of its transport will be made by rail.
The retailer will expand its Schafisheim centre, close its Dietikon and Basel distribution centres; close frozen distribution centres in Givisez and Hinwil; and close bakery sites in Basel and Wallisellen.
Some 1185 jobs will be affected, with Coop saying it it will offer other positions to affected employees. It will create some 1,000 new jobs in Schafisheim, where it will build a new frozen foods and bakery logistics centre.
Coop said it will not renew its bakery contract with HiCoPain but its bakeries in Bern, Castione, Gossau and Chur will continue to operate.
