Swiss chocolate producer Barry Callebaut has bought a cocoa factory in the US to meet growing customer demand for the company’s products.

Callebaut, which this year secured a major US supply deal with Hershey, said this morning (5 October) that had acquired Food Processing International for an undisclosed sum.

The company has already earmarked US$51m worth of investment for the factory, which has a capacity of 25,000 metric tons a year. The money will be spent on doubling the site’s capacity.

Callebaut CEO Patrick De Maeseneire said: “We need a modern site for the production of semi-finished products, such as cocoa liquor, cocoa butter and cocoa powder, in the United States to keep up with the current and future expectations of our customers especially in the high-end quality segment, as well as our own internal needs.”
