Swiss dairy group Emmi has unveiled plans to build a CHF30m (US$24.1m) plant to increase its fondue and cheese making facilities.

Looking to increase its capacity ahead of deregulation in the European cheese market, Emmi said it would expand its site in Langnau by 2010 and relocate production in Thun to Emmental as of 2008. Trade barriers in Europe for cheese fall away in 2007.

“This move will enable Emmi to secure its long-term international competitiveness in view of the complete deregulation of the cheese market and the company’s international leading position in the fondue segment,” Emmi said in a statement.
