French retail giant Carrefour has confirmed that it is introducing a convenience store format into Thailand.

“We can confirm that Carrefour Group is launching a new store format in Thailand,” a spokesperson for the company told just-food.

CenCar Co, Carrefour’s local operator, opened its first Carrefour City 300-square metre convenience store in Thailand earlier this week, the Bangkok Post reports.

The small store concept marks a departure from Carrefour’s previous focus on hypermarkets in Thailand and follows the development of the Carrefour City format in France earlier this year.

Carrefour declined to comment further on its plans for the Thai market. However, the company had previously moved to quash rumours that it could exit emerging markets in order to focus on its French operations.
