Calls have been heard for strict controls to be imposed on the importation of meat and bone meal animal feed from the EU because of the associated risks of BSE to the domestic livestock industry.

Loathaveesuk, president of the Thai Fishmeal Producers’ Association, is heading the call and has submitted a letter outlining the association’s concerns to the government’s livestock department.

Not purely a demonstration of charitable concern, of course, the fishmeal association has a vested interest in reducing the Thai use of meat and bone meal as raw feed materials, which far outweighs the usage of fishmeal. In July of this year the government slashed import tariffs from 10% down to 1% and import quantities for the year to November leapt up 20,000 tons on the same period last year to 63,633 tons.
