Tesco-Lotus, the Thailand unit of UK supermarket retailer Tesco, is to open a store in Roi Et in December as part of its “upcountry” expansion.
Tesco-Lotus hope that the new store will encourage local community involvement to help the people of Roi Et meet their shopping needs.
The company recently opened a new 34,224 sq m store at Bang Kapi, which brings the total number of Bangkok Tesco-Lotus outlets to 19. Costing Bt1bn (US$22.9m), the latest branch is Tesco-Lotus’ biggest yet and will employ more than 420 staff.
The company’s 20th store in Bangkok is due to be opened next week at Lat Phrao.
In December, Tesco-Lotus plans to open a smaller store at Pong Petch in Bangkok.

By GlobalDataTesco-Lotus also plans to open a new 6,000 sq m store in mid-November on the island of Samui, as well as a supermarket in Kanchanaburi by the end of this year.
The company currently operates 39 stores in Thailand, and plans to open one or two more supermarkets in Bangkok next year. Tesco-Lotus also plans to open six new hypermarkets in Thailand next year.
The company does not appear to be put off by accusations of unfair trade practices that have been levelled at several foreign supermarket chains, including Tesco and Carrefour, by the Thai government.
“Our position is that every country in the world has rules and regulations to govern retail operations, and Thailand is no different. Whatever retail laws are in force, we as a business will operate within [them],” CEO Michael Raycraft told The Nation.
