Tesco has expanded into the hypermarket channel in Thailand, announcing the opening of its first Tesco Lotus Extra store and mall in the country.
The retailer said it invested some THB300m (US$10m) in the centre, which will feature more than 120 permanent and temporary shops, a food court, a new retail area covering over 20,000 square metres, including a financial and insurance services store and an optician.
The Tesco Extra store, located on Rama IV Road in Bangkok, will offer more than 13,000 SKUs across fresh food, clothing, toys and electronics.
“Tesco Extra stores have been hugely successful in the UK and Europe. Today, it is the most popular big format store for UK shoppers,” said Tesco Lotus CEO Chris Bush.
“This store is the first Extra in Thailand, and we are confident that others will soon follow. It is part of our philosophy in doing our best and being the first for our customers, to always innovate and create differential for our customers.”
