Retail giant Tesco is reportedly planning to expand its operations in Thailand.

The UK-based group is to spend some THB7bn (US$216m) on bolstering its presence in the country, a Reuters report said today (11 April).

Darmp Sukontasap, a senior executive of Ek-Chai Distribution System, which operates Tesco-Lotus stores in Thailand, said Tesco is expected to add around 60 convenience outlets to its portfolio in the country. Tesco already has 260 stores in Thailand.

“We plan about THB7bn for the overall expansion this year,” Sukontasap told Reuters. He declined to say how many hypermarkets Tesco are looking to build in Thailand.

Tesco officials could not be reached as just-food went to press.
