UK: Government pushes for single labelling system
The UK government’s much-discussed anti-obesity strategy, unveiled today (23 January), looks set to bring to a head the long-running debate in the UK over food nutritional labelling. As part of a wide-ranging multi-strand policy agenda, covering diet education, food labelling, physical activity and preventative health, the Government will set out proposal to develop “a single, simple and effective approach to food labelling.”
UK: Biofuels “hurt the environment”, says MPs
Biofuel production is likely to make food more expensive and could endanger food security in developing countries, a group of UK politicians claimed today (21 January). Biofuels are increasingly being seen as a green alternative to oil and governments in the US and Europe have encouraged production as part of wider environmental policies.
US: Danone US arm sued over probiotic ads
Danone’s US subsidiary has been hit with a lawsuit that claims the company of using false advertising to promote its probiotic yogurt in the country. The suit against The Dannon Co was filed yesterday (23 January) in California, accuses the company of convincing consumers to pay more for the yogurt because of its assumed health benefits.
INDIA: India mulls reform to retail investment laws
India could relax its rules on allowing foreign investment into its fast-growing retail sector, according to a government minister. The Indian government currently bars overseas retailers from investing directly in the country’s retail business but a number of multinational groups, including Wal-Mart have set up local joint ventures.

The Australian government has today (22 January) directed the country’s competition watchdog to commence a formal inquiry into grocery prices in a bid to fight inflation. The inquiry will look at the structure of the grocery supply chain and competition issues for stores, in particular looking at pricing by Australia’s two biggest retailers, Woolworths and Wesfarmers, owners of Coles supermarkets.
