Tesco will this month launch separate ranges for healthy eating and weight loss in the UK. The country’s largest grocer has revamped its Healthy Living range, a stable that will contain 200 products, and developed Light Choices, products tailored for dieters.
FRANCE: Sarkozy “considers GM ban”
French President Nicolas Sarkozy has today (8 January) indicated he may ban GM crops if the country’s scientists cannot confirm their safety. A panel of French scientists are due issue a report on GM crops as the country’s politicians consider new legislation on the sector.
UK: Cost pressure to continue, says Premier
Premier Foods, the UK’s largest food group, saw its shares tumble today (10 January) after it warned of continued cost pressure throughout 2008. The company, which makes brands including Branston pickle and Quorn meat-free products, said it had seen “significant cost pressures” in 2007, particularly on wheat.
UK food retailing showing vitality amid downturn
Talk of a consumer downturn in the UK has increased since the turn of the year after a series of downbeat updates from the country’s retail sector. Food retailing, however, is showing signs of bucking that trend. Dean Best reports.
