Scandinavian retailer ICA and French giant Carrefour have refused to be drawn on reports in Turkey linking them each with a bid for local retailer Migros.
Carrefour and ICA, which is majority-owned by Dutch retail giant Ahold, are among five bidders for Migros, according to reports in Turkey today (7 November).
Migros, which has been put up for sale by Turkish conglomerate Koc Holding, is also said to have Russia’s Alfa Group and Turkish firms Kiler and Ulker.
Carrefour, which has a 50% share in Turkey’s number two food retailer, Carrefour Sabanci, stayed tight-lipped on the reports. “The group’s position is no comment,” a Carrefour spokesperson told just-food from Paris.
ICA, which operates predominantly in the Nordic region and the Baltic states, is a surprise name among the bidders.

By GlobalDataA spokesperson for the retailer said ICA “never comments on rumours” but hinted that any expansion plans would focus on its key markets.
“Turkey is outside that geographical area, so it doesn’t really make any sense,” the spokesperson said. “Of course, we are always looking for opportunities; that’s an ongoing process. But the markets we are interested in are mostly in the Nordic parts of Europe.”
Officials at Alfa, Kiler and Ulker could not be reached for immediate comment.
